I had been asked about this particular topic previously and it’s a topic I have been meaning to address for some time. This is one of the rare FYI resource sheets that transcends the typical 1 page/double sided format. Perhaps this is an indication of the complexity of the issue at hand and how attempting to address the negative connotations associated with gossiping is not always ‘cut and dry’.
We are all guilty of it to some degree, we have all perhaps repeated something negative or some ‘juicy’ snippet of news that we have heard about someone else without actually checking the facts or catching ourselves before we speak and continue to breath life into such rumours and half-facts. The truth is that gossiping can be far from harmless, it can be malicious and is seen as one of the many forms that workplace bullying can take.
The more I delved into it, the more fascinating it was to discover the science and the psychology that lies behind gossiping.
The latest FYI/ASK resource sheet; entitled "Gossiping" can be downloaded freely from the FYI Initiative page.
